Soulblight Gravelords Warscroll Review: Necromancer and Deadwalker Zombies

In this video TheJTJ reviews the Warscroll for the Deadwalker Zombies and Necromancer. I cover their abilities and discuss some tactics for each.

Necromancer

  • Cost
    • 125
  • Notes:
    • Deathmages
    • Wizard
  • Max wound output:
    • 6
  • Average wound output:
    • 1
  • Thoughts:
    • Possibly the worst Melee profile of any hero in the book.
    • You are not taking him for fighting.
  • The Good
    • Undead Minions helps to keep him alive.
    • Vanhel’s is one of the best spells in the book.
    • Lore of Deathmages
    • Good cost for what he does.
  • The Bad
    • Low save and 5 wounds needs to stay backline
    • Can only cast one spell, lore of Deathmages is great, but you will probably be basting Vanhel’s every turn.
  • Thoughts
    • If you are taking several blocks of summonable units look to take a Necro. His Ability to make units activate a second time with Vanhels is super scary for opponents. A smart opponent will look to hold a dispel for Vanhels every turn.
    • If you are running Fell Bats or Dire Wolves be carful with only a 5” move the Necro cannot keep up with them. 18” Range for VsDm is good, but you do not want to out kick your coverage.
    • You could run 2 for redundancy, “one gets snipped out”. the second one would be used to debuff enemy units with Deathmages Spells
  • VsDM
    • Works on: Black Knights, Grave Guard, Deadwalker Zombies, Deathrattle Skeletons, Dire Wolves, Fell Bats
    • All out attack work for the whole phase. Look to use it on the VsDM unit.
    • Deadwalker Zombies-
      • Cast it on them. On there first activation they can pile in 6” on their first activation and 6” on the second because of Newly Dead. That’s a possible 12” of pile in move. However the spell states can activate if tis is withing 3”.
    • Grave Guard
      • Look to buff them other ways, Wight King, Coven Throne, Vampire Lord, All out Then get that extra round of combat they become on of the best damage dealing units in the book.
    • Vanhel’s Danse Macabre
      • A+
        • Bellow average Casting, Good range, Great tactical impact on the game.
        • The true reason you take a Necromancer.
  • Unit Rating
    • A-
      • I am torn on giving him a B. Lets be real, you are taking him for his spell and possibly to fill out a battalion requirement.

Deadwalker Zombies

  • Cost
    • 115
    • 20 models in a unit
  • Notes:
    • Deadwalkers
    • Summonable
    • Deadwalker Zombies
    • Battleline
  • Max wound output:
    • 20
  • Average wound output:
    • 4
  • Thoughts:
    • You are fishing for mortal.
    • They need to be buffed or they are not that great.
  • All out attack
    • Max: 20
    • Average: 4.5
  • Crimson Feast “+1 Attack”
    • Max: 40
    • Average: 8
  • All out Attack, +1 Attack, Vanhel’s
    • Max: 80
    • Average: 18
  • The Good
    • Cheap battleline
    • Summonable
    • Can pile in within 6”
    • 2+ to add model back from The Newly Dead
  • The Bad
    • No save, slow, 5+ to hit and wound.
    • They will melt against strong combat units.
  • Thoughts
    • Look to exploit the 6” pile in rule.
    • You can get around Unleash Hell, by not charging.
    • Unbuffed they have bad damage output, you are fishing for MW.
    • Many great uses in a game – holding objectives, coming out of the grave as a threat, screening, tarpit.
  • Unit Rating
    • A
      • A very good battleline choice. In most lists I would look to take 1-2 units minimum.
