Color Guide: Baleful Realmgates

In this Color Guide I go over the colors used to paint the Baleful Realmgates Terrain for Age of Sigmar.

These are some of the most iconic terrain features in the games and they can be painted quickly to add some nice terrain to your table or display board.

I painted these to a nice tabletop terrain standard. However you could spend the time to really make these a centerpiece feature for a display board or use it as a base accent for a large model, like Mannfred, or Deamon Prince.

I painted to different styles not only to have some verity, but to also represent 2 different realms.

Notes on paint and wash.

I would never suggest to use cart store paint on miniatures, however for some terrain it can be a cost effect alternative to the higher end paints. The big difference in high quality miniatures paint is the amount/quality of the pigment in the mix. Generally speaking miniature paint when applied goes on smoother and in thinner coats. When I am painting a large terrain piece to a table top level instead of using the expensive named brand I will use some craft store acrylic paint. Liquitex is a descent brand and you can get a variety of colors that you may not even need to mix. the white paint I used was “The Fine Touch”, I only used a pea sized dab to mix into the Grey for the dry brush stage. That $2.99 paint is not the best and I would suggest getting a bit better paint even if you are just painting terrain. All in all it does the job and save a good bit of money.

To also save money I use a homemade wash. I use water, Liquitex Matte Medium, and a mix of black ink and a dab of black acrylic.

Building tips:

I completely build everything and primed them. These models came together very quickly.

Color Guide Purpose:

To give painters a lists of paints that can be used to achieve a specific look on their miniatures.  The actual techniques I use can me modified based on the painters skill and desired effect. The hope is to save hobbyist time by providing examples of paint combinations they can use, eliminating the trial and error of finding the correct colors.
